Don’t Be SAD – Be Green!

We’re entering into my favorite season of the year – Hello Spring!  Like so many people, I have my bouts with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).   I’ve found that taking extra care of my health and well being during this time really helps me manage the effects of this condition.  Research has shown that women are more likely to be affected by SAD.  Another reason for us to take some time for ourselves!

One of my favorite nutritional  and mood improvement is to add as many “green” foods as possible to my diet, from breakfast to dinner; including snacks.  These fruits and veggies are packed with vitamins and minerals which really does a body, mind and soul good.  Give it a try – perhaps starting with the recipe below.

By special request of my college alumni, TaShan Parks Twyman, here’s my recipe for a delicious and nutritious Super Foods Green Smoothie.  Thanks for asking – we really enjoy it here at the Hodge House.  It’s very filling and can be used as a meal replacement or healthy snack.

Since accepting that SAD is a part of my health make-up, I’ve established simple lifestyle routines to cope with with it.   Knowing that as sure as the seasons WILL change; come mid-December to late February, I WILL have SAD.  I surround myself with extra measures of kindness, positive people and activities and inspirational messages.  I also get out and walk as the weather permits without stressing myself out to much about the cold, rain, snow, sleet, cloudiness, etc.

I love to garden and though it’s still a bit early to garden outside in my area, I’ve pressed my handy dandy Seed Sprouter into action to provide a healthy addition to soups, salads and sandwiches.  When my children were younger, we enjoyed this so much.  My firstborn returns home today and I know he will get a kick out of seeing this on the counter.

I’ve also found relief in healthy comfort foods choices, freshly pressed juices

The Green Bath

and yes, even extra long baths – sometimes colored green to make me HAPPY!

So I encourage you, if you have SAD or simply don’t feel up to your “normal” self – take it easy, don’t be so hard on yourself, this too shall pass – as sure as the seasons WILL change.  Just be prepared with healthy, inspiring options and you’ll be feeling much better in only few short days.

I call routines and activities such as these as the Living Life Marvelously Lifestyle.  What are some ways you actively do to take care of your health and wellness this time or any time of the year?  Feel free to share here, via email or on any of my social media platforms.
