28 Days of SELF~LOVE (Day 5)

28 Days of SELF-LOVE-2

Words matter!  We all know that, right?  We were taught this as kids – probably at our mother’s knees or kindergarten or certainly by early elementary school.  But somehow as adults, many of us seem to forget this concept in our everyday lives.  It goes back to the Scriptures as in  Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Confession time:  Even though I knew this concept first from my home-training, then from my Catholic schooling and later from the Scriptures, I didn’t always follow it.  As my mama would say, I “Put my mouth in motion before I put my mind in gear.”  Sometimes I said things without thinking about the consequences to the person – much less what I was doing to my own spirit and sense of SELF~LOVE.

Thankfully, through really focusing on this bad “habit” and growing in age and grace, I started paying attention to what I was saying before it left my mouth.  I also learned to apologize when I slipped up.  With time and practice – I have fewer of them – Thank God!  My tongue is being tamed with the help of this additional Scripture in James 3:5 -So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

I’m a huge fan of India Arie.  I call her a “wisdom lyricist.”  Her words are so powerfully uplifting and self-affirming.  One song really caught my attention a few years ago in relation to the words we (I) use.  It’s a little phrase tucked away in “Get It Together.” Listen to it and see if it doesn’t make sense that, “The words from our mouth, we’re the first to hear. Speak words of beauty and you will be there.”

Today, choose a word or phrase that you will meditate on, say out loud as a loving greeting to yourself.   Post it on your mirror, doors or other prominent places around your home and workspace.  Words truly have the power to change people – starting with me and you.  Some of my favorite greetings to myself are: Hello love.  I look Marvelous.  Ready to Rock and Roll.  Love you, girl.  I’m pretty.  Lovely.  I’m smart.  I’m kind.  Life is Good.

Give it a try – and report back!

More tomorrow.
