28 Days of SELF~LOVE (Day 10)

28 Days of SELF-LOVE-2

It’s Friday! It’s Friday! It’s Friday! Time to show some SELF~LOVE with Friday Flowers. Cut flowers bring freshness and a sense of calm and relaxation to our living and work spaces. It’s no wonder that upscale hotels, stores and restaurants use them to make their spaces more inviting to their guests and customers.

Cared for properly, cut flowers will give you days of enjoyment, adding beauty and fragrance to your environment. Here are six steps to keep them looking fresh longer.

  1. Start with a clean vase that has been washed with hot soap and water to remove any bacteria or fungus.
  2. Fill the vase with warm tap water. Let the water sit for a few minutes to allow the air bubbles to escape.
  3. Add the packet of flower food that came with the flowers. It is a mixture of bleach – to control bacteria; citric acid – to help the stems “drink” the water and sugar – which feeds the flowers.
  4. Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle while holding underwater at least one inch from the bottom. This creates a wider opening for the stems to drink up the water.
  5. Keep them away from fruit – they don’t go together! Fruit gives off ethylene gas which tells the flowers (plants) to ripen. This will shorten their life span.
  6. Keep them cool! Cut flowers don’t like it too warm. Don’t place in a window or near a heat source like a heater or vent outlet. If possible or desired, you may place them in the fridge overnight to give them an extra boost for more enjoyment the next day.

For a few dollars, you can add fresh cut flowers to your home and/or office with subtle but meaningful effects. Some of my favorites for their long lasting beauty, fragrance and ease of care are Roses, Star Gazer Lily – and my all time five star winner and very economical – Alstroemeria Lily! Oh, yes – one of my favorite places to put put cut flowers is in the bathroom. They always make me smile when I see them there – they’re my own private treat!

The biggest cut flowers day of the year upon us – so many are waiting to see who will buy us what. But if you love flowers, why wait? There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to a nice bunch of fresh cut flowers – TODAY!

More tomorrow!
